HYPERHIDROSIS
For those suffering from severe underarm sweating – a condition that is clinically referred to as hyperhidrosis – Botulinum toxin injections can help. Hyperhidrosis can be an embarrassing and hard to disguise condition, which can affect a person’s confidence, productivity, and quality of life. The FDA has approved Botulinum toxin to treat hyperhidrosis when antiperspirants or other medications fail. Not only does this treatment alleviate the actual sweat, but it also reduces body odor (Bromhydrosis).
TREATMENT PROCESS
First Health Medical & Skincare centre often performs Botulinum toxin injections for those experiencing profuse sweating of the underarms and hands. Our expert doctor first evaluate each individual to diagnosis hyperhidrosis and then customise a treatment plan based on personal needs. The number of Botulinum toxin units used, injection site, and frequency of treatment will vary with each client.
HOW DOES BOTULINUM TOXIN TREAT EXCESSIVE UNDERARM SWEATING?
Botulinum toxin are purified proteins that block the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. By interrupting this chemical messenger, Botulinum toxin prevents sweat prevention at the injection site. Strategic and precise placement of injections is the key to effectively stopping the glands from producing sweat. A single treatment of several injections is typically sufficient to reduce sweating for several months; however, follow-up sessions are usually necessary to maintain results.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING TREATMENT?
Prior to treatment, you will be prepped with a cleanse of the area and application of iodine and cornstarch. Sweat interacts with cornstarch and iodine and the sweating area (glands) turn purple. These areas are then marked for injection! Botulinum toxin injections are made in the skin near the sweat glands responsible for perspiration and are administered using a very fine needle. Injections are shallow and relatively painless, injected just below the surface of the skin, where they remain. Approximately 20-25 injections in each underarm are made.
The standard dose is 50 units per underarm but may vary depending on the patient. Treatment time may take anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the injection site. There is little to no downtime associated with this treatment, and most patients are able to return to their normal routine immediately.
You should notice an initial improvement of excessive sweating within about 2 weeks. Repeated treatment is safe and effective for hyperhidrosis and consistently results in long-lasting improvements and a significant reduction in excessive sweating, thus improving quality of life.
HOW LONG DOES THE TREATMENT LAST?
The effects of Botulinum toxin injections usually last approximately 4 to 6 months. Although, some patients are free of excessive sweating for more than 6 months to a year.
WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS?
Most patients do not experience side effects after treatment. However, localised pain or mild bruising may occur near the injection site for some people.
